Not many people think of Vanuatu as a golf holiday destination. As local residents now for a few years and running a small complex of boutique apartments we decided that maybe we can change that path and show people overseas that they can come and enjoy a few games of Golf and still have time for different activities, or simply relax. Often golfers go with their partners who are not golfers themselves and we can show them that Vanuatu is a great destination to explore and when they go back home there will be stories to share not only about golf but about Vanuatu.

There are a few places in Port Vila where you can have a game of golf - Port Vila Golf & Country Club, Le Lagon Resort and Holiday Inn Resort. The courses at the resorts are small and design for the leisure of the guests.

If we talk about golfers, the best course is at Port Vila Golf and Country Club, which is located at Mele village, on the way to Cascades Waterfall and Hideaway Island.

The course was founded by the then President of the Republic of Vanuatu, Ati George Sokomanu in 1983. It is an excellent 18 holes golf course, measured in metres, has a driving range and Australian handicapping. Length of the course: 5818mtrs, Par: 72.
The Club is open 7 days and welcomes visitors. Fields range between 70 and 110. Tuesday is Ladies Day (9 hole comp) and Saturday is only for players with a registered handicap (proof required).

Mele is a well maintained course in a very pretty location by the sea. The greens are Tifton Dwarf grass, which is a bit slow by Australian standard. You can hire a caddy, the people from the local village, but you may not rely on them with advice on which club to use. Club hire is available but with limited selection of left and right-handed clubs.

The two-story clubhouse overlooks the water, you can get drinks at reasonable price and meals are available. Buggy hire, bucket of balls and now motorised buggies available as well.

Just a reminder to make sure you have your umbrella handy and put your 30+ and bottle of water in your golf bag.

VGO

Vanuatu Golf Open is played annually at The Port Vila Golf and Country Club. The event attracts professionals and Amateurs from many countries. The VGO is a significant event now with the NSWPGA backing and professionals able to gain order of merit point for the PGA in Australia.

Many keen golfers come to Vanuatu every year to join the professionals for a week of golf and mix in the local social life. It is a wonderful event and all the functions and entertainment contribute to the event to be remembered and talked about back home.
